She began singing at the age of 4. Her mother would encourage her to bring her to audition for Sesame Street. In 1985, when she was six-year-old, she started her acting career by appearing regularly on the PBS children's education program Sesame Street. She performed in many Broadway productions in New York City, including Fences (with James Earl Jones, later Billy Dee Williams) and Orfeo del Campo (off-Broadway). Seven years ago, she was the winner of Star Search. She received an overall score of 4 stars when she performed for the second time.
